A Startup Journey: Inflow Interactive LLC (2014-2020)
Inflow Interactive emerged from a weekend hack-a-thon that deployed IoT sensors and video to follow the lightning-fast teamwork of a Fairfax Fire & Rescue squad all the way into Inova hospital’s emergency room. I built the prototype instructor’s app and analyzed JSON sensor data. SMART Emergency Medical Teams won several conference awards for multi-team simulations, and I became Co-Director of the project in 2016. As the research team applied for major National Science Foundation grants, I split off to pursue a startup opportunity.
The core startup idea was to deploy a multi-team simulation and debriefing platform (TeamSense). A shared cloud-based platform would allow sensor data collection and performance analytics at reasonable costs. So I attended EMS conferences, visited emergency rooms, and met with fire chiefs, military nurses and paramedics. I joined the AFCEA Homeland Security Committee, and learned the priorities of DHS and government contracting. Along the way, I developed tremendous admiration for the professionals that save lives under conditions of stress and danger. I want to thank the many people who encouraged our vision for improved team training simulations and real-time performance analytics!
Potential investors were naturally more skeptical about the business model and significant upfront costs of integrating multiple technologies. TeamSense was not destined to be a classic Silicon Valley garage startup! By the end of 2019, I began to let go of the highest hopes; then CoVid put an end to the startup journey. Some of our ideas live on today in the well-funded precincts of Marine Corps and military EMS simulation labs. I learned a great deal about designing and implementing data products; now I look forward to sharing my analytics and project skills back in the real world.
