Healthcare team simulations on FHIR

Flexible Simulation Designs
SMART Activity Observer® provides team leaders and instructional designers with a method for running repeatable, insightful simulations. Multiple runs of a standard simulation and variant scenarios can be executed during the same session with-out the need to reset system parameters. Data collected from similar simulations can be analyzed over time to reveal new insights to team performance, and opportunities for continuous process improvement. The flexible internet-of-things sensors approach can further enhance measurement of team capabilities by capturing new data streams (e.g. biometric responses), and tracking real-time availability of critical equipment and supplies.

Standards-based
SMART Activity Observer® is based on open-source international standards for data interoperability and portability. Experience API® (xAPI) is a data capture standard for experiential learning (formal settings, social learning, content curation), while FHIR® is evolving from the international HL7 standard for sharing electronic health record data. The API’s share a JSON|REST|NoSQL data architecture that requires minimal network bandwidth, and renders data that are human readable.

SMART Activity Observer® Benefits
SMART Activity Observer’s integration of data collection and analytics enables data-driven learning designs for multi team medical and disaster recovery simulations. Anticipated 2017 benefits include:
• Measure and reduce cycle-time in the emergency medicine ‘golden hour’
• Track critical equipment and supplies to support team capability
• Measure and assess transfer-of-care events
• Reduce instructional design and mobile simulation prep time
